Gina Lollobrigida arrives in Santa Margherita

Our third film location of Come September (1961), the second one in Santa Margherita, is the story of many movie scenes in the cinema industry. A story of what could have been, what if? A scene that looked good on paper but for one reason or another didn’t make it past the Editing room.

Having reached his Villa and uncovered what his majordomo was up to, Robert (Rock Hudson) can be seen on his way back from the train station having picked up Lisa (Gina Lollobrigida). The drive back to the house was actually filmed nearby Rome where the movie was also shot. However Director Robert Mulligan did shoot a scene where Robert greets Lisa at the station, and the station used was Santa Margherita Ligure- Portofino’s train station.

I only found out by chance a few years ago when finding a copy of French magazine CINE Tele-Revue of October 1960. In an article talking about an American comedy being filmed on the Italian Riviera, you could see a few pictures of Rock and Gina at the station, wearing exactly the same outfits.

Since then, we spotted similar pictures in the Japanese press and on The Rock Hudson Project page!
