The Luxury Hotel of Come September

If you have enjoyed our Come September posts, the chances are you are a true Come September fan. You may even be a hardcore Rock Hudson, Gina Lollobrigida, Sandra Dee, Bobby Darin or Walter Slezac admirer? Want to see where Sandra & Bobby met and fell in love?

If that’s the case, you may even want to know where the actors stayed during filming? And perhaps, perhaps, you may choose to stay there yourself? We found this out one extraordinary morning in June this year, thanks to the enthusiasm and collaboration of many locals.

Already in Santa Margherita with a rigorous timetable and a map of film locations to take pictures of, we stopped at Caffè del Porto for…a coffee. There, and with our clapperboard on the table, we started talking to Mariuccia and Paola, the owners, regarding a location for another movie (Love on the Riviera, more Coming Soon on the blog). From one film to another, within minutes they were on the phone to someone who might be able to help us. Forget the days of planning and the rigorous timetable, fifteen minutes later we had made our way to the Sunflower bar where Suave was expecting us. By the time we arrived, Suave had already spoken to Roberto and Stefano, from the nearby Salumeria Relevant who, in turn, had made a call… Like a Cold War spy movie, at zero hour, we needed to meet our contact at an agreed spot…

In fact, the meeting point took place in a familiar road, the same steep and curvy road heading towards Villa delle Palme. Indeed, when we stopped, we realised that Gina, Rock, Sandra and Bobby had actually stayed only yards from their film location. They probably even went there walking!

There, on Corso Nicolò Cuneo, Stefano from the Covre Immobilare estate agency was waiting for us: We were standing outside what once was the prestigious Eden Grand Hotel Guglielmina!

Stefano kindly took us on a private tour of this historic building. Walking along the corridors and gardens where royalties once strolled, Stefano provided us with dates and names of many of those who had stayed here. Originally the property of Queen Guglielmina of Holland, Villa Guglielmina had then become the Eden Grand Hotel Guglielmina where our Hollywood stars had come while filming Come September.

After a few name changes, the Eden Grand Hotel Guglielmina is now the Eden Palace, an apartment complex with swimming pool, solarium, private gardens, a heaven of tranquility and a view to die for! One can stay at the Eden Palace for a week or two or, should you be planning to come every year like Robert Talbot (Rock Hudson), you may prefer to buy an apartment.

Rumour has it that some September nights, you can hear Bobby serenading Sandra…

 Se vi sono piaciuti, i nostri articoli su Torna a Settembre probabilmente siate dei veri appassionati di questo film. O magari sarete dei grandi ammiratori di Rock Hudson, Gina Lollobrigida, Sandra Dee, Bobby Darin o di Walter Slezac? Vorreste scoprire dove Sandra e Bobby si siano conosciuti e innamorati?

 Se questo è il vostro caso, magari vi piacerebbe sapere anche dove hanno soggiornato gli attori durante le riprese?E magari soggiornarvi?

Noi abbiamo scoperto questo in una straordinaria mattinata dello scorso Giugno, grazie alla collaborazione e all’entusiasmo di alcune persone del luogo.

Di buonora ci trovavamo già sul lungomare di Santa Margherita con un piano ben preciso e la mappa con tutte le Film Locations da immortalare, quando a un certo punto ci siamo fermati per una pausa al Caffè del Porto. Con il nostro fedelissimo CIAK sul tavolo abbiamo cominciato a chiacchierare con le proprietarie del bar, Mariuccia e Paola a proposito di un altro film (Racconti d’Estate a breve sul blog). Nel giro di pochi minuti Paola era già al telefono con chi forse avrebbe potuto aiutarci nella nostra ricerca. Ok lasciamo da parte il piano strategico che avevamo progettato per la giornata, perché tra cinquanta minuti avremmo dovuto trovarci al Bar Sunflower per parlare con Suave che…ci stava aspettando. Una volta li, Suave aveva già contattato Roberto e Stefano della vicina Salumeria Relevant che a loro volta avevano fatto un’altra telefonata…Come succede solo nei film di spionaggio all’ora X avremmo dovuto incontrarci con il nostro Uomo nel posto prestabilito…

 Il luogo dell’appuntamento era in una via pressoché familiare, e sì proprio la stessa strada che porta a Villa delle Palme. Dopo aver parcheggiato, ci siamo resi conto che Gina, Rock, Sandra e Bobby avevano soggiornato a pochissimi metri dal set!

 E lì, proprio in Corso Nicolò Cuneo, abbiamo incontrato Stefano della Covre Immobiliare. Ci trovavamo all’ingresso del prestigioso Eden Grand Hotel Guglielmina!

 Stefano è stato così gentile da farci fare un tour privato di questo fantastico complesso. Durante la visita, tra corridoi e giardini dove una volta passarono reali, Stefano ci ha raccontato il susseguirsi degli illustri ospiti che hanno nel tempo soggiornato qui. Originariamente chiamato Villa Guglielmina proprietà della Regina Guglielmina d’Olanda, in seguito diventato Eden Grand Hotel Guglielmina, dove i nostri protagonisti risiedevano durante le riprese di Torna a Settembre.

Dopo alcuni cambi di nome Eden Grand Hotel Guglielmina oggi si chiama Eden Palace, un complesso di appartamenti compresi di piscina, solarium e giardini privati, insomma un paradiso con una vista mozzafiato! Si potrebbe soggiornare in uno di questi appartamenti all’Eden Palace per una settimana o magari due. Se invece decideste di venire ogni anno come Robert Talbot (Rock Hudson) probabilmente vi converrebbe comprarne uno.

 La leggenda racconta che in alcune notti di Settembre, si possa sentire Bobby fare la serenata a Sandra…
