So far, when talking about Come September (1961), we have mainly talked about Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida. However, in a comedy involving a conflict of generations, they represented the old guard and we therefore need the young one. Who better than teen idols Sandra Dee, only 18 but already at the top her career, and US singer Bobby Darin to fight them. Taking part in his first movie, Darin even wrote the title song for it.
Not only this but, icing on the cake, and in a Hollywood twist and publicity stunt the producers could not have hoped for, Darin and Dee fell in love on set and got married within weeks.
When Tony (Darin) and his friends are about to head off to France, they meet Sandy (Dee) and her friends.
Suddenly, staying in Italy seems the right option. To stay close to the girls, they decide to set up their tent outside the millionaire’s Villa.
And this is precisely where they are, no tricky cuts or editing here. Their tent is set up on the very same sharp corner of Corso Nicolò Cuneo opposite the gates of Villa delle Palme,
and despite what Talbot (Hudson) may think about it.
The little patch of grass is still there today with a bench for you to enjoy the view.
And Tony’s plan seems to be working…smoothly!
Like Rock Hudson, we will come back to Santa Margherita for more posts.
In the meantime we invite you to visit Santa Margherita and Portofino to spot the movie locations from Come September we have already talked about.
There are plenty of nice hotels for all budgets in the area. Having said this, if you are a true Come September fan, a hardcore Rock Hudson, Gina Lollobrigida, Sandra Dee, Bobby Darin or Walter Slezac admirer, you may be asking yourself …where did the actors stay during the shoot? To be continued…
